FUNDAMENTALS OF THE FAITH

SPIRITUAL GROWTH – LESSON 4

  1. What is God’s plan for you? (2 Peter 3:17-18)

  2. How are you to grow? (Ephesians 4:15, Colossians 2:6-7)

  3. What must you have in order to grow? (1 Peter 2:2)

Spiritual growth happens through conquering temptation

  1. What things should we watch out for or stay away from? (Ephesians 5:3-5)

  2. What are seven things that God hates? (Proverbs 6:16-19)

  3. How are we tempted to sin? (James 1:13-14) “Lust” means a desire that is out of control or all consuming.

  4. What will God do when we are tempted? (1 Corinthians 10:13)

  5. How can we get the victory over temptation? (Philippians 4:13, 1 John 4:4, 1 John 5:4, James 4:7)

  6. What if I stumble and give in to temptation? (1 John 2:1 - Advocate means, “to speak for, plead for, argue for, speak in favor of, helper.”, 1 John 1:9)

Spiritual growth happens through faith

  1. What does God give to every Christian? (Romans 12:3)

  2. What is faith? (Hebrews 11:1-2)

  3. Where does faith come from? (John 3:27, Romans 10:17, Hebrews 12:2)

  4. How does God expect a Christian to walk? (2 Corinthians 5:7)

Spiritual growth happens under Godly spiritual authority

  1. What is the role of a spiritual father (authority figure)? (1 Corinthians 4:14-17)

  2. Do you have a spiritual authority figure who you allow to “warn” you, “urge” you and “remind you of the way of life in Christ”, if so, list him/her or them.

  3. How often do you seek him/her or them out for their input in your life?

Spiritual growth happens through personal disciplines

The discipline of prayer

  1. “No man is greater than his prayer life…The secret of praying is praying in secret. A sinning man will stop praying, and a praying man will stop sinning. We are beggared and bankrupt, but not broken, nor even bent.” - Leonard Ravenhill. “Why Revival Tarries.”

  2. In whose name should you pray? (John 14:13-14)

  3. How should we pray? (Matthew 6:5-15)

  4. What assurance can we have that when we pray we can have whatever we prayed for? (1 John 5:14-15)

  5. How can your prayers be hindered? (Isaiah 59:2; 1 Peter 3:7)

The discipline of meditation

  1. “In contemporary society our Adversary majors in three things: noise, hurry, and crowds. If he can keep us engaged in ‘muchness’ and ‘manyness,’ he will rest satisfied. Psychiatrist Carl Jung once remarked, ‘Hurry is not of the Devil; it is the Devil.’” - Richard Foster “Celebration Of Discipline”

  2. What should I meditate on? (Psalm 119:97, Psalm 63:6)

  3. How often should I meditate on God and His Word? (Genesis 24:63, Psalm 1:1-3)

The discipline of fasting

  1. Should Christians fast (abstain from food for a set time)? (Matthew 9:15, Acts 13:2)

  2. What does God say about fasting? (Zechariah 8:19, Matthew 6:16-18)

  3. What are the spiritual benefits of fasting? (Psalm 69:10, Matthew 4:4, John 4:32, 34, Luke 2:37-38, 1 Corinthians 9:27, 1 Corinthians 6:12, Matthew 17:19-21)

  4. “You are to be the master of your stomach, not its slave.” - Richard Foster “Celebration Of Discipline”

The discipline of study

  1. How are we transformed? (Romans 12:2, 2 Timothy 2:15)

  2. How does meditating on scripture effect us? (Psalm 1:2-3)

  3. How should we react to good preaching? (Acts 17:11)
